Being a veterinarian is an honorable job

“Being a veterinarian is an honorable job, because you deal with animals,” Artur Titanyan began the conversation with a convincing voice, stepping into the cattle barn in a special outfit.
The cattle farm, where we met Artur Titanyan, is located in the Tashir community. It is built in line with modern standards and harmoniously complements the picturesque nature of Lori, creating a wonderful scene of agrarian life.
It was this beautiful landscapes that accompanied the 60-year-old veterinarian throughout his life and influenced his choice of profession.
“My parents kept cattle. My interest and love for them started from there,” Titanyan recalls his childhood, adding that his parents did not interfere, and he became a veterinarian on his own accord.
Throughout his career, he was sure that by saving the lives of animals, he helps people. He told about such an episode with great enthusiasm.
“You know, in families making ends meet, cows provide the main source of income. Once in one such family, a cow was supposed to give birth, but a complication arose. They could not provide proper help and when I arrived, they had already decided to slaughter it. I managed to save both the cow and the calf with the help of the birthing device. You will not imagine the happiness of the owners. They were so happy that they decided to present the calf to me. Of course, I didn’t take it, but that feeling that I not only saved the animals, but helped a family” Artur Titanyan does not hide the feeling of pride and the sparkle in his eyes.
Despite the conscientious attitude towards his profession, Titanyan speaks with sadness about the stereotypical perceptions of the public, that the profession of a veterinarian is mostly associated with unpleasant smells and dirty work. He sees the main problem in the forgetting of the profession, lack of awareness.
“We save not only the lives of animals, but also prevent the spread of public diseases and epidemics,” our interlocutor emphasizes the importance of the role of veterinarians, expecting the public’s understanding and appropriate attitude.
Meanwhile, the work of a veterinarian, despite being in demand, attracts a few as a profession.
“There is no such day that a veterinarian leaves the house, does not do a good deed and does not get paid,” assures Artur Titanyan, stressing that a good specialist is appreciated and paid properly. He says the same to the students and apprentices visiting the animal farm. The latter are students studying in colleges with a dual educational system.
According to the veterinarian, in recent years there has been a positive shift in the promotion of the profession due to the “Modernizing Vocational Education and Training in Agriculture in Armenia” (MAVETA) program, within the framework of which veterinary is included among the professions taught with a dual educational system.
Artur Titanyan also hopes that many girls will choose this profession.
“The opportunities opened up by the sector are enormous. If they do not want to enter a cattle farm, they can definitely wear nice clothes and work in the field of food ssecurity, in laboratories, veterinary pharmacies, vet clinics,” Titanyan tries to stimulate interest in the profession of a veterinarian, using this opportunity of being interviewed.

Business with significant principle of love for animals

Leyli Chobanyan, who is an experienced farmer, lives in the village of Agarak, not far from the town of Stepanavan, Lori Region. For the past 25 years, Leila has begun her day by caring for the animals, working tirelessly to keep her farm thriving and growing.

In 1990, I got married and moved from Vanadzor city to the village of Agarak, not far from Stepanavan. My husband’s family owned three cows, and my mother-in-law was highly skilled at processing milk and making tasty cheese and other dairy products.
As I was born and raised in a city, it was difficult for me to be engaged in animal husbandry at first, but after a few years, I began to assist my husband, and we even decided to increase the number of our animals.

At the beginning our farm was small, but through hard effort, it increased to 70 heads of cattle and 30 heads of small ruminants. Now the number of animals is much more bigger, but it is easier for me, because many functions are mechanized, we have different types of equipment: milking machine, milk separator, etc.

We sell some of our milk, and I process the rest myself, making cheese, butter, and yogurt. My customers impatiently wait to purchase my products.

We rented 60 hectares of land to ensure the fodder base for our animals. I have two sons who work equally with me and my husband. We cultivated fodder for our cattle and sold the extras to the neighboring farmers.

If you want to be successful while living in the village, you have to work every day. Animals require daily care, you should start each day thinking about your animals, doing everything to improve their conditions, properly organize feeding and care.

I believe that our success was also due to the fact that my husband grew up in the village and helped his parents with agricultural jobs, so he learned how to cultivate the land and keep cattle.

He also taught me various functions: now we assist the cow during calving, both of us take the animals to pasture, and we even manage to provide first aid to the animals before the veterinarian arrives.

Conscious choice of profession

Hiriknaz Egnatosyan has been working for many years as a veterinarian in Gtashen settlement of Amasia community. He has also been engaged in animal husbandry for many years.

Veterinary is the most desirable profession for those who love animals, and many children begin to indicate their interest in this profession at a very early age.  Since I was a little child, I have enjoyed playing with and caring for animals. During my school years, I also developed an interest in the areas of biology and chemistry. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to become a veterinarian when I had to choose my career. My parents learnt that there had been a chance for rural residents without exams to be admitted to the Yerevan Zootechnical-Veterinary Institute on the condition that they would return to the area and practice medicine in Amasia after graduation.

This idea excited me a lot, I thought it was a good opportunity to fulfill my dream, get a higher education, get a job and stay in the same place where I was born and grew up.

I moved to Yerevan to study, where I also met my future husband, who came to Armenia from Georgia to study veterinary.

Since we both loved this profession, we participated in both theoretical and practical classes with great love and enthusiasm. After graduation, we settled in the village of Gtashen in Amasia and both of us got jobs: I started working as the manager of the Gtashen district Zootechnical-Veterinary Station, and my husband as a veterinarian.

The profession of a veterinarian is very interesting. If you love your profession, you will definitely succeed. Your life’s work should bring you joy, satisfaction and increase your self-esteem.

For about 30 years, my husband and I have been working as veterinarians, serving two villages: Gtashen and Kamkhut. We have a 24-hour veterinary point-pharmacy.

I am glad that I made the exact decision in choosing my profession at the right time and if I had the chance again, I would choose the same profession.
Veterinary is a very important profession in terms of maintaining human health. We veterinarians often say that a doctor treats people and a veterinarian treats humanity. Many people are unaware that certain diseases, known as zoonotic diseases, can be contracted from animals and then transferred to humans. If we do not cure animals or stop the spread of diseases among them, the number of illnesses and epidemics that can affect humans will be several times higher.

After many years of practice as a veterinarian, I am pleased to say that I have assisted numerous farmers and provided guidance on how to properly care for animals or rapidly address illnesses before seeking the assistance of veterinarians.

With small steps towards big dream

Ani Sukiasyan was born in 2002 in the town of Tashir, Lori Region. Despite her young age, she has been working at “Lorva Kat” company for several years.

In 1998 my parents founded a small dairy factory, which today, thanks to their hard work, became one of the famous dairy companies in Tashir.

My whole life, my childhood and youth, was spent in that company. After finishing school, without hesitation, I decided to enter Stepanavan State Agricultural College named after Professor A. Kalantar, Department of Dairy Technology.

In 2019, while still being a student, I participated in the contest of young technologists held in Georgia and due to the cheese I made, I won the first place.

After three years and six months of studying at the college, I entered the Faculty of Food Technology of ANAU and started working in the cheese and dairy factory founded by my parents.

I was also entrusted to be the head of apprenticeship and organize the practice of the students studying in the faculty of dairy technology at Stepanavan State Agricultural College for the academic year of 2021-2022.

Development of technologies and modernization of work no longer require physical strength. Today, education and the introduction of scientific methods are crucial. I’d want to underline that while picking a career, don’t consider if it’s a “male” or “female” one. Let your preference be your guide.

Dairy products are essential for the human nutrition, it is considered indispensable and has an exceptional importance in children’s diet, especially in the early stages of their lives.

I have had a dream since I was a child, which I will try to fulfill at any cost: production of infant milk powder and ice cream in Armenia. To produce milk mixture large volumes of milk is needed to be collected, which is not possible under these conditions, but I hope that one day I will fulfill my dream and establish a factory that will become a worthy competitor to the imported brands.

I have already started the path to fulfill my dream, this year with the help of my parents I initiated the establishment of the ice cream factory, which I hope will soon delight the children of Lori region with its products.

There are no coincidences

Arpine Hakobjanyan has been working at the “Elola” milk processing factory since 2016. She started her professional career as a dairy lab technician, then in a short period of time she registered professional growth, occupying the position of the laboratory manager.

Years ago, when I was still 27 years old, I accidentally found a job at the “Elola” milk processing factory. While studying at Goris State University, I acquired the qualification of a specialist in biochemistry, and after several years of non-professional work, I was looking for a job related to my qualification.

I saw the announcement of “Elola” company about the vacant position of a dairy laboratory technician and decided to try my hand at it.

The profession of milk and dairy technologist and laboratory technician is very interesting. You just have to try. I am sure that as soon as you go to a workshop and apply gained knowledge in practice, you will immediately fall in love with the profession and your work.

I got hired very easily, and after two-month probation period, my success story and professional growth began. My love for work and determination to excel did not go unnoticed by my employer, and within a short period of time I was offered the position of the quality control officer, and after 4 years I became the manager of the laboratory. Currently, I am entrusted to coordinate the process of obtaining ISO 22000 food safety management system (FSMS) certification.

While working at “Elola” LLC I received an offer to teach at the Goris State Agricultural Collage after professor Kh. Yeritsyan, in the faculty of milk and dairy technology.

I consider myself a lucky person because, even small, but I have my own investment in creating quality dairy products, I am happy that I am doing what I love and enjoy.

I am glad that I have the opportunity not only to apply my knowledge at work, but also to transfer it to my students.

I have been working in the field of dairy production for 7 years and I have never regreted my choice of career path.

Every single day I go to work with great pleasure and I strive to make more efforts to have my own contribution in safe food and quality products creation.
