Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia: Project Presentation / Meetings in Target Marzes

From July 14-28, 2021, meeting-discussions were organized in target marzes  of Tavush, Lori, Syunik and Vayots Dzor within the framework of the “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” project, implemented by the WWF Caucasus in Armenia (WWF-Armenia) in partnership with Strategic Development Agency NGO and financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

During the meetings held at the regional administrations, the representatives of the WWF Armenia and SDA NGO presented to the representatives of the regional administrations the “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” project, the goals and possible directions of its implementation, as well as the planned steps and expected results.

The project aims to improve the incomes of farmers and rural businesses in remote areas and livelihoods of the rural population thanks to better economic and more sustainable use and management of local natural resources.

The regional administrations’ representatives expressed readiness to make efforts to develop and strengthen the cooperation, realizing the importance of the initiative and the scope of the project.

The “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” project implemented by the WWF Caucasus in Armenia (WWF-Armenia) in partnership with Strategic Development Agency NGO, and financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is a part of a larger regional program “Eco-Corridor Fund for the Caucasus” (ECF), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the KfW Development Bank.

Presentation and discussion of livestock movement’s roadmap

On 21-07-2021 in the Syunik Animal Market, a presentation and discussion on the livestock movement’s roadmap in the Syunik region of Armenia, supported by the “Livestock Development in the South” program, was held.

Representatives of the Syunik region’s enlarged communities of Tatev, Tegh, Goris, Gorayk, specialists of the engineering design company, program staff of SDA NGO took part in the meeting.

The importance of the livestock movement and the necessity of the initiative for the communities were pointed out once again during the discussion.

Gagik Beglaryan, a representative of the engineering design company, presented the work done during the implementation, the results obtained – the roadmap to properly organize the seasonal movement of shepherds and animals, and the location of existing and necessary infrastructure.

During the presentation and discussion of the livestock movement roadmap, suggestions were made on the most suitable infrastructure locations for the construction of veterinary checkpoints to control the movement of animals within the boundaries of the administrative territories of all communities, to determine the availability of water resources along with the livestock movement.

At the end of the meeting, the further steps of the roadmap implementation were pointed out.

P.S. The idea of the initiative came up on April 30, 2019, during the 4th workshop of the Program Coordination Platform for Sustainable Management of RA’s Natural Fodder Areas: Pastures and Grasslands, when the communities of Syunik Region raised the issue of regulating the livestock seasonal movement of Tegh, Goris and Tatev communities of Syunik Region to the summer pastures of Gorayk community.

Discussions dedicated to a “quality mark” creation and its mechanisms with the participation of milk processors

On 20th of July, 2021 within the framework of the “Livestock Development in Armenia: South-North” project a conference with the participation of milk processors was held in Yerevan by giving the start of discussions dedicated to a “quality mark” creation and its mechanisms.

The first part of the workshop included an introduction about the general work on creating a “quality mark”, the potential problems and their solutions.

During the second part, working groups were formed to establish quality standards, form regulations, and develop a communication strategy.

The event was summed up by a roadmap development for further work and schedule definition.

The Livestock development in Armenia South-North project is financed by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of Austrian Development Cooperation, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The Importance of Antimicrobial Resistance: A conference took place

On July 15th and 16th, 2021 a conference on “The Importance of Antimicrobial Resistance” was organized, initiated by the Food Safety Inspectorate of the Republic of Armenia with the support of the “Livestock Development in Armenia – South-North” program, implemented by the Strategic Development Agency NGO and co-funded by the Austrian Development Agency’s Austrian development cooperation program unit and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The human body can become resistant to antimicrobials both by taking the medicine and as a result of its residues in food. Antimicrobial resistance is a global issue not only in the field of medicine but also in the field of veterinary medicine and food safety. Experts regularly raise the issue of antibacterial resistance, but the problem remains.

The main goal of the conference was to analyze the level of control of the circulation of antibiotics in the field of veterinary medicine, to suggest control mechanisms, as well as to present the results of the research conducted by scientific and laboratory centers in the fields of veterinary medicine, healthcare, and food industry, as well as to share the international experience and scheduled programs.

The event was attended by the veterinarians and the representatives of the Food Safety Inspectorate of the Republic of Armenia, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Strategic Development Agency, the Center for Risk Assessment and Analysis, National Agrarian University of Armenia, the Bee Disease Laboratory, FAO and the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia.

At the beginning of the event, the participants were greeted by the head of the RA Food Safety Inspection Body, Mr. G. Avetisyan and the chairman of the Strategic Development Agency NGO Mr. M. Ayvazyan. They stressed the role and work of all governmental and non-governmental agencies/stakeholders in the fight against antimicrobial stability within the framework of the “One Health” idea.

The specialists presented the gaps in veterinary medicine use, as well as the mechanisms for controlling the circulation of antibiotics in the field of healthcare, the results of research conducted by scientific and laboratory centers, as well as the international experience, programs, and environmental issues.

Seminar on the topic “Development/ modernization of pasture rotation schedule”

On July 15th, 2021 seminar on the topic “Development/ modernization of pasture rotation schedule” was organized in the Amasia community of Shirak marz within the frameworks of “Introducing pasture and grassland maps for sustainable pasture and grasslands management practices in Lori and Shirak marzes of Armenia” pilot project.

The project is financed by the GIZ ECOSERVE Project, with co-financing from the “Livestock Development in the South of Armenia” project implemented by “Strategic Development Agency” NGO with the financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The following topics have been covered during the seminar:

  • Schedule and timeline development procedures for regular use of pastures,
  • Development of pasture rotation plan and procedure and features of rotations by pasture management units,
  • Procedure for calculating allowable grazing days in regular pasture management units for herds consisting of different sex and age groups.
