Presentation of the project “Resilience and Economic Recovery of Border Communities in Armenia” at the Gegharkunik Regional Administration

On the 30th of January, Lilit Chitchyan, the head of the social protection program department of the UN World Food Program, Mary Sargsyan, the project manager at “World Vision Armenia” organization, and Vahe Hovhannisyan, the project manager at “Strategic Development Agency” NGO, presented the “Resilience and Economic Recovery of Border Communities in Armenia” Project’s purpose and principles at the RA Gegharkunik Regional Administration.

The above-mentioned project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the UN World Food Programme (UN WFP) in partnership with the World Vision Armenia (WVA), Child Development Foundation (CDF) and Strategic Development Agency (SDA). “Resilience and Economic Recovery of Border Communities in Armenia” Project aims to improve crisis resilience in the border settlements of Vardenis (Gegharkunik), Sisian (Syunik), and Jermuk (Vayots Dzor) communities by providing humanitarian and economic support.

In the Gegharkunik region, the Project covers 9 settlements of Vardenis community, which were affected by the military aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan in September 2022.

The project has two main components. The first component envisages the provision of social assistance to the conflict-affected families, and the second component covers the implementation of rehabilitation activities.

The first component of the project is to provide food assistance cards to vulnerable families in border settlements affected by the aggression. The kind of food assistance will be provided to 300 families. Currently, the registration phase of food-insecure households is being conducted.

Vahe Hovhannisyan, the project manager at the “Strategic Development Agency” NGO, presented the income-generating interventions to be implemented in the settlements of the Vardenis community, around 60 livestock farms will benefit from the project interventions.

Karen Sargsyan, the Governor of Gegharkunik Province welcomed the initiative and expressed readiness to provide the necessary support.

Regional discussions for curriculum development with dual-approach

In the framework of “Modernizing VET in Agriculture in Armenia” MAVETA project regional workshop-discussion was organized in Stepanavan, Lori Marz from 24 to 27 January, 2023 for the revision of the educational curricula of Junior Veterinarians, Milk and Dairy technologists and Farm manager professions.

The participants of the workshop were the lecturers of Stepanavan State Agricultural College, private sector representatives and other stakeholders active in the above mentioned fields.

The workshop was facilitated by Johannes Brunner who is a lecturer and adviser at the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences of the Bern University of Applied Science.

Workshop on “Dual education piloting in VET system”

On December 19-20, within the framework of the “MAVETA” project, a workshop on “Dual education piloting in VET system” was organized. The workshop was attended by representatives of VET institutions involved in the “MAVETA” project and experts actively involved in the field.

The aim of the workshop was to present and discuss the Armenian and international experience of the dual approach and the methodology of adaptation in the VET system of Armenia. During the workshop, the participants were divided into 3 groups as by selected professions, thus: Veterinary Specialist, Milk and Dairy Technologist, Farm Manager. During the two-day workshop the importance and ways of the combining the of theoretical and practical training elements of the above-mentioned professions were discussed. VET representatives and private sector discussed also the options of establishing appropriate conditions for the apprentices at the real working place.

The workshop took place in an atmosphere of active discussion and effective working group.

The MAVETA project is funded by a broad coalition of international and local organizations led by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), including the Austrian Development Agency, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Government of Armenia, the Swiss Church Aid (HEKS/EPER) NGO, Izmirlian Foundation, the Strategic Development Agency (SDA) NGO and Vanand Agro CJSC. The project’s implementing partners are the GIZ and HEKS/EPER with the involvement of SDA and the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (HAFL).

Veterinarian training course on “Maintaining Cattle Reproduction”

On December 14-15, within the framework of the “Livestock Development in Armenia: South-North 2” project implemented by “Strategic Development Agency” NGO, a training course on the topic  “Maintaining Cattle Reproduction” was organized, which was attended by 34 veterinarians and artificial insemination technicians from the target communities of Shirak, Gegharkunik and Syunik regions.

The course was conducted by a veterinarian from the Republic of Belarus and a representative of “BelVetFarma” company. The trainer presented the problems related to the cattle reproduction, the economic consequences and the importance of maintaining the reproductive health of the cattle, as well as the methods of productivity control: synchronization and artificial insemination.

Modern treatment methods and remedies were presented to the participants. The meeting created an opportunity for the participants to to create business contacts with the representatives of “GralVet” LLC, the supplier of veterinary medicine and other supplies.

Closing meeting of the “Skills, Knowledge and Intermediation Development” pilot project

On December 9-10 within the framework of the RECONOMY “Skills, Knowledge and Intermediation Development” pilot project implemented by Strategic Development Agency (SDA) NGO, a concluding meeting was organized with the project partners: Armenian National Agrarian University, Unified Social Service of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of RA, Cheesemakers’ Union of Armenia, Armenian Tourism Federation and Armenian Hikers Association.

During the meeting, the partners shared the results of the program activities and also presented the factors contributing to the successful course of the program and further opportunities for cooperation.

As a summary of the project, the partners were handed certificates of appreciation for their active and effective involvement and implementation of the project.

The “Skills, Knowledge and Intermediation Development” pilot project is implemented by SDA NGO in the framework of RECONOMY.

RECONOMY is a regional inclusive and green economic development program of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), implemented by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation in partnership with SDA NGO and others in the Eastern Partnership and the Western Balkan countries.
